Dear Children,

It is exhausting to prepare for an emergency.
Having the food we need in long-term supply, the food we need for stuff we eat every day, medicines, first aid kits, rope ladders, extra copies, 72 hour kits (still need to put some diapers in that...), fire drills, smoke detectors, locks, insurance....phew. It is exhausting! However, not only is it a good idea to prepare for a wide range of emergencies, it is also what Heavenly Father has asked us to do, through his prophets. For me once I start thinking of things that could happen (i.e. earthquake) then I just feel more and more unprepared. For now as I work to have our family more prepared I just figure if I keep at it, I'm at least headed in the right direction!

Dear Children,

I hope you don't spend much time in your life complaining. There is so much to complain about, it's so easy to do. On the other hand, think of all there is to celebrate! I think of the world a lot. It's past, it's present. When something is hard I think of how someone right now is roasting hot somewhere and would do anything for some water. Or how 200 years ago whatever task I am doing that is annoying (laundry) would have been so much harder. I think of the things I am grateful for all the time and I think that's what really helps me to be positive most of the time :) Just focus on all the blessings you have.
Dear Children,

I hope you spend a lot of time in your life on your church callings. There will be meetings, unexpected things, inconvenient things, tasks that take you out of your comfort zone. I hope you realize the importance of church service and volunteer and really sacrifice.
One of my favorite quotes from one of my favorite people, Marjorie Hinckley:
"I don't want to drive up to the pearly gates in a shiny sports car, wearing beautifully, tailored clothes, my hair expertly coiffed, and with long, perfectly manicured fingernails. I want to drive up in a station wagon that has mud on the wheels from taking kids to scout camp. I want to be there with a smudge of peanut butter on my shirt from making sandqiches for a sick neighbor's children. I want to be there with a little dirt under my fingernails from helping to weed someone's garden. I want to be there with children's sticky kisses on my cheeks and the tears of a friend on my shoulder. i want the Lord to know I was really here and that I really lived."
Dear Children,

I don't know if you will get my gene for appreciating things like Mondays, January and lists. To me they are a new start and really motivate me to do more. Your dad just started to get into the spirit of that this January. We have made some new family goals like meal planning, getting better prepared for emergencies, and doing what is best for our family. We got a HUGE calendar and have been keeping track of schedules as well as planning lunches and dinners for the month. It has been so nice and has helped the stress level SO much! I hope to instill in you a desire to be a planner and to use that to your advantage so you can enjoy life more!
